S. Cesarea Terme is a small glimpse of Paradise on the sea; the Mediterranean climate is mild in winter too thanks to its position, sheltered by hills and by the Serra of Cerfignano. The colours and the scents of this land make it sought after and beloved even in winter, especially for the excellent spa, rich of sodium-chloride-sulphurous and iodide-lithium waters, that gush at a temperature of 27-30°C. Here it’s possible to be cured through inhalations and nebulizations; mud and thermal baths are best to treat after-effects of trauma, joint pain, arthritis, rheumatism and more.
Thermal establishments are: Terme Gattulla, Albergo Palazzo and Terme della Grotta di Santa Cesarea. A great swimming pool of about 1000 square meters dug into the rock, where through pipe unions thermal water blends with sea water, was made between Terme Gattulla and the cave of Santa Cesarea. The bathing establishment Archi, on the sea, is characteristic because of monoliths emerging from the sea, called “tagliate”; another feature of this part of Salento is the pinewood on the plateau and the sight from the top of the coast that ranges up to Cape Santa Maria di Leuca.
In this area there are the most beautiful caves of Salento; on the way to Castro, or better by sea, you can make tours of about an hour that let you see these parts of coast, really wonderful because of rocks and caves you can meet. Leaving Punta Miggiano, after an inlet, you can find the Romanelli cave, discovered in 1879 by Paolo Emilio Stasi. Generated by Karst, it has historical importance because the study of stratifications reveals climate and environmental change in Quaternary. Here you can see fossil remains of animals of the hot period, like elephants, hippos, rhinos, and of the cold period, such as ibex and boreal birds. There are also a lot of graffiti and drawings with human figures and animals and a painted stone that is thought to be the oldest found in painting discovered in Italy.
